Education and Professional Experience
Professor Dr. Feride İffet Şahin received her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Istanbul University, Faculty of Medicine, in 1988. From 1988 to 1992, Dr. Şahin worked as a practicing physician at the Ministry of Health. In 1997, she earned her PhD in Medical Biology and Genetics from the Department of Medical Biology and Genetics at Gazi University.
Between 1994 and 1995, she worked as a visiting scientist in the Department of Medical Oncology at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, under the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. From 1992 to 1997, she served as a Research Assistant at the Department of Medical Biology and Genetics, Gazi University Faculty of Medicine; from 1997 to 2000, she was a Lecturer; and from 2000 to 2002, she worked as an Assistant Professor. She was awarded the title of Associate Professor in 2000.
In 2002, she was appointed Head of the Department of Medical Biology and Genetics at Başkent University. In 2004, she became Head of the Department of Medical Genetics at Başkent University Faculty of Medicine. She was promoted to the rank of Professor in 2007. Since 2023, she has been serving as the Chief Physician and General Director at the Smartgen Genetic Disease Assessment Center.
Main Research Interests
Professor Şahin’s primary research focuses on hematological malignancies, solid tumors, and prenatal and postnatal diagnosis of hereditary diseases. She integrates high-throughput technologies, such as Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and microarray technologies, into daily practice, emphasizing the identification of molecular mechanisms underlying genetic and sporadic pathologies.
